Polyester

Polyester is a polymer that is melted in granular form under the influence of thermal conditions in a spinning machine, pressed through a spinneret and converted into filaments (= melt spinning).

No chemicals are used in this process. The fibers are then further processed into a twisted or braided rope.

Properties

  • Synthetic rope, non-biodegradable
  • Strong and durable
  • Heavy rope
  • Flexible, smooth and stays that way

Technical specifications

  • (16-fold) braided, braided spun or braided and impregnated
  • High breaking strength, approximately as strong as polypropylene
  • High wear resistance, slightly less than polyamide
  • Little stretch (± 10%)
  • Absorbs moisture and sinks (density 1.37 g/cm³), wet rope has the same breaking strength as dry rope. Does not rot, shrink, or stiffen.
  • Best UV resistant synthetic rope
  • Extremely heat resistant: melts from 250°C
  • Resistant to acids, not to bases
  • White rope with red marking thread (braided) or with blue marking thread (braided spun, slightly less strong and often used for boats)

Applications

  • Starter cord (impregnated)
  • Shot rope (braided spun polyester)
  • Nautical sports
  • Tent guy line
  • Outdoor decoration due to high UV resistance
