Single vs double twist in macramé

01.11.2023
Single vs double twist in macramé

Macramé ropes are available in two styles: single twist and double twist. What's the difference between the two, and for which applications should you use each? Generally speaking, single twist is ideal for decorative elements like fringe and small details, while double twist is more suitable for larger pieces and to create strength. For example, you might choose single twist for macramé feathers and a subtle finish on wall hangings, while double twist is more suitable for a rocking chair or plant hanger.

Single twist

  • Soft.

  • Fine fringes.

  • Individually twisted or single twisted macramé cord.

  • Perfect for small applications that are primarily decorative and do not need to carry too much weight.

  • Can be easily combed out.

Double twist

  • Stronger and sturdier: better for heavy things.

  • The yarns are twisted together in two steps: first into a single strand and then into three strands. The result is a 3-ply cord.

  • If you loosen the three flaps again, you can comb out loose, wavy fringes. Ideal for adding texture to your work.
